Something about the morbid side of things is funny. I don't know what it is, but blood and gore can be hilarious when amplified to ridiculous extremes. Artists began to realize this harmonious relationship between fright and humor and thus, the horror-comedy was born. The genre is considered to have started with Washington Irving's 1820 short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Since its inception, horror-comedy has transcended into film and continues to the present day. Here are the five best examples of what the genre has to offer.
5. Return of the Living Dead
Return of the Living Dead was written and directed by the writer of the original script for Alien, Dan O'Bannon. The film introduced the concept of zombies eating brains and was one of the first to give them the ability to run. The movie is funny with the way it pokes fun at stereotypical punk rockers. Characters like Trash and Suicide proclaim, "You think this is a fucking costume?! This is a way of life!"
4. Fright Night
Peter Vincent hosts a late night TV show that runs old horror films. High school student, Charley Brewster is a huge fan and watches his show religiously. Charley begins to notice some alarming behavior in his new neighbor, Jerry Dandridge. Upon investigation, Brewster finds out that his neighbor is a vampire! He then has to enlist the help of his favorite horror host to help stop the vampire form terrorizing the neighborhood.
3. The Monster Squad
A group of elementary school kids are horror movie fanatics. They start their own club called The Monster Squad dedicated to their love of the genre. A mystical amulet then resurrects the Universal monsters from their grave. Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Creature, and The Mummy are on a mission to destroy the amulet and plunge the world into eternal horror. The Monster Squad realize they have to band together and stop the monsters for once and for all. If this movie teaches us anything, it's that The Wolf Man most certainly has nards.
2. Evil Dead 2
Ash and his girlfriend decide to rent a run down cabin in the middle of the woods. Upon their arrival, they come across a mysterious book and corresponding tape. The tape features a reading of the book. Once Ash plays the tape, an onslaught of monsters and zombies come forth. Ash and a group of redneck companions try to destroy the book and put their living nightmare to rest. Amidst the ruckus, Ash loses his arm and replaces it with a chainsaw. Groovy.
1. Dead Alive/Braindead
Before directing the Lord of the Rings series, Peter Jackson gave birth to three of the best and most fucked up movies ever made. Dead Alive is undoubtedly the best of the trilogy, although Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles are both... experiences. Lionel Cosgrove's mother is bitten by a voodoo rat monkey that turns her into a zombie. Despite Lionel's attempts to keep her in the basement, the outbreak spreads. If you have never seen Dead Alive, this is all you need to know. This movie contains a lawnmower as a zombie fighting weapon and a martial artist priest who "kicks arse for the lord!"
